Minimalism

Strategizing Furniture & Décor

I, for one, love to make changes to my home—be it moving furniture and décor around to a full gut and reno—all to find the best set-up and feel. I know my home affects how I feel so getting it where I want takes plenty of my attention and feels very rewarding when I get it just right. There is plenty of research to back this up. But you don’t have to buy a lot of, or really any in most cases, new furniture and décor to improve your well-being.

Starting down a more minimalist path over 6 years ago, I have actually prided myself on getting rid of more and more furniture and accessories that cluttered my home’s interior. This has given it a cleaner and more open look (and making me some $$ along the way). Plus the fewer places you have to store stuff, the less likely you are to accumulate more and to have to clean in those nooks and crannies.

So, next time you want to change up the look of your home, look at what you already have and think about what you really are trying to achieve. Are there items in another room that would work better here? If you feel overwhelmed by what’s in the space, is it that you need to create some openness by either replacing the current pieces with smaller ones or simply getting rid of them altogether? Is that corner china cabinet storing anything you use regularly, or that you’ve felt obligated to keep, but is basically empty? The space in most homes, while growing over the years, is still expensive real estate, so fill it wisely.
